Evan Craft: Chances

This month’s Hope Blog is from Evan Craft and it’s called Chances.

King David is described as a “man after God’s own heart”. This is one of the greatest titles a follower of Christ can ever receive. God anointed him and even placed him on the throne of Israel. Some people may hear about King David and think he must have lived a perfect life. The truth is, his life was a mess, but God still called him a man after His own heart.

David was a murderer, an adulterer. He sent Uriah to the front lines to die in battle and took his wife Bathsheba out of jealousy. There’s not much worse you can do than kill a man and take his wife. So why do we still consider David a man after God’s heart? Shouldn’t he have been disqualified? Certainly, murder and adultery should exclude one from such a title. But here’s the twist. All of us have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Every single one of us. No matter how good we try to be or how much we’ve messed up. Sin is sin. But David repented. The power of sin is no match for the atoning blood of Jesus. David failed again, but he repented again. He recognized his failings and sought the Lord.

Today we have a choice to repent. A crossroads, to continue carrying our burdens or to lay them at the feet of Jesus. No matter how far you may think you are, God is the God of second chances. He won’t give up on you.

2 Samuel 12:13

13Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”

Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.
